US inhabited solar and storage installer Sunrun Inc (NASDAQ:RUN) on Wednesday stated a virtual power plant (VPP) joining rooftop solar and battery systems has been permitted by the New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC).
As element of the project, Sunrun will utilize over 300 of its Brightbox battery systems to accumulate power from rooftop solar installations and serve it to Orange & Rockland’s (O&R) electricity grid.
The VPP will partly offset requirement on the utility’s grid in major regions, while providing locally-developed solar power to customers in Orange and Rockland counties.
For managing and dispatching the energy in the VPP, Sunrun will get compensation from O&R, while the utility will benefit from lowering the load on its distribution system in the areas.
O&R will start informing its customers in select areas in the next months of the opportunity to adopt Sunrun’s solar power plus battery system.
A day earlier Sunrun announced a similar partnership with Southern California Edison for a VPP in Southern California.
